Managing Junk Mail
Junk mail is an annoyance that anybody with an e-mail account will be familiar with and, while the University filters and blocks millions of these messages each day, it’s inevitable that some of them will reach your inbox. This guide contains tips on how to use junk mail filtering to hopefully reduce the amount of spam you see in your inbox.
Managing junk via the Outlook Client
When logged into Outlook, right-click on the junk message you wish to block and hover over “Junk”. From the pop-out menu, click “Block Sender”.
You will see a confirmation message informing you that the address has been added to the blocked senders list.
For finer control over these settings, and to view a list of everyone you have blocked, click the “Junk” icon located on your Home ribbon menu in the top-left corner of the interface:
Click the “Blocked Senders” tab at the top of the Junk Email Options menu to view a list of all blocked senders. You can add more addresses from here, or remove anyone you may have blocked accidentally (to remove an address from the list, highlight it and click “Remove”):
It’s possible to block a single address or an entire domain. For example, in the above screenshot we have entered *@app.topica.com. This asterisk before the @ symbol tells Outlook to automatically filter all messages that come from an address ending with @app.topica.com – particularly useful when spammers have control of multiple addresses, as this saves time blocking individual senders. This method can be used to block messages from any sender domain, e.g. *@domain.com
If you make any changes in this menu, please click “Apply” to ensure the changes are saved before closing the window.
Managing junk via Nexus Webmail
Log into your mailbox via https://outlook.office.com using your SSO credentials
Right-click on the junk message you wish to block and hover over “Junk E-mail”. From the pop-out menu, click “Add Sender to Blocked Senders List”.
You will then see a confirmation message informing you that the address has been added to the blocked senders list.
For finer control over these settings, and to view a list of everyone you have blocked, click Options in the top right-hand corner of the webmail interface.
From the drop-down menu that appears, select “See all options…” to be taken to the main options menu. From the left-hand sidebar, click “Block or Allow”. On the next screen is a Blocked Senders option containing a list of every address and domain that has been blocked:
